Miles came to the design scene in a less conventional way than most. He left school in 1986 and did a 4-year apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery, and continued to work in the industry for many years, on various types of projects including, shops, hotels, and luxury motor yachts.
When he reached his mid 30s he became disillusioned and what he describes as ‘lost’ in life. He decided to make some changes to his lifestyle, and in 2008, at the tender age of 38, he took up the challenge of going to university to study Furniture and Product Design. He says this was one of “the best decisions I have ever made”.
In the summer of 2011 he graduated with a degree in his chosen subject. The pieces he has created so far are all very different, some involve precision manufacturing, and others are rustic, organic, hand crafted pieces.
All his work is highly functional, he wants his pieces to be used as intended, to be cared for, and over time, he hopes they will go on a journey with their respected owners, and maybe even passed down as heirlooms
